All-new crossover utility vehicle on the cutting edge. introductionthe 2007 ford edge is an all-new crossover sport utility that answers the call for a roomy vehicle with utility and style. Nor is it a minivan. Yet it's more than a car. the edge handles better than the truck-based explorer while offering almost as much cargo space. Benefiting from all-wheel drive and a fully independent suspension, it's easier to control than a truck-based suv in the snow or on wet, slippery roads. Also, getting in and out of both the front and back seats is easier. In fact, the back seats in the edge are roomier than those in the explorer, a benefit of its design. the edge is not small. It competes with the nissan murano, toyota highlander and other midsize crossover utility vehicles, all of which are larger than they appear. we found the edge delivered on its promise to be a dual-purpose vehicle. It's roomy and comfortable, and it has fully foldable seats for cargo carrying. It drives well, with good performance from a new v6 engine mated to a new six-speed transmission. the edge has a modern look we find appealing and its bold chrome grille adds to its presence. We're certain most will view the edge as an edgy suv more than a car. That's no doubt intentional, designed to be appealing for drivers moving from a traditional suv who want a rugged look with room for the family and assorted stuff. The reason is immediately apparent, it has a very wide track and a longish wheelbase. More important, this is not just about looks. A long wheelbase and wide track make for a more stable vehicle because the mass of the vehicle is inside the wheels. A go-kart is the ultimate expression of this look. We're not suggesting the edge looks like a go-kart, but its aggressive stance makes it stand apart from the tippy look of traditional suvs with relatively narrow track measurements and massive front and rear overhangs. the edge features ford's newly rediscovered bold, american design. The big chrome grille is placed well forward and has wide chrome slats that merge into the relatively small headlights at each side. The high hood is short as the windshield rakes forward more like a sports car or modern minivan. despite having a relatively high waist line with shallow side windows, the edge does not appear as stubby as photographs sometimes suggest. The sporty look is helped by pronounced fender flares and large wheels. The rear tailgate slopes quite significantly and is nicely rounded, avoiding the truck-like rear tailgates found on many suvs. We found the rear design to be a cross between a lexus rx and a bmw x3, which cannot be a bad thing. to top it all off, the optional vista roof adds expansive twin glass moonroofs that cover the whole roof providing all passengers with a clear view of the sky. There is only a foot-wide panel between the front and rear panels that is not transparent. interiorutility used to mean just the ability to carry stuff. Comfort and style were secondary, even mutually exclusive. The edge manages to provide plenty of utility and a stylish, comfortable interior. Starting at the back, the tailgate lifts to reveal a wide opening. And even when the rear seats are in place there's a reasonable amount of cargo room. pressing a button automatically reclines the rear seats to give a total of nearly 70 cubic feet of storage on a nearly flat floor. Furthermore, the front passenger seatback can be folded forward to provide a mostly level floor space for long objects all the way to the dashboard. Headroom is also reasonable in the rear, even with the optional sky vista roof. The rear-center passenger even gets more room than normal in a vehicle of this size, thanks to the wide track. Getting in and out is easier due to the rear wheels being placed well back allowing for less intrusion from the wheel well. front-seat occupants find a generous amount of room, again largely due to the vehicle's generous width. There is a large center console with a storage box big enough for a laptop computer. There are two decent cupholders alongside the substantial looking transmission shifter. The edge is based off the same platform as the ford fusion and the mazda6, regarded as one of the best handling midsize sedans. So the edge starts life with a good base. Ford says it purposely designed the edge to deliver a slightly softer ride. Those who have driven both vehicles concur with this assessment. ford's all-new 3. 5-liter v6 engine has variable valve timing and is much smoother and more refined than its previous v6s. The new engine is mated to a new six-speed automatic transmission developed with general motors. We found the engine produced a good range of power at all speeds and the transmission shifted smoothly. We would rate the performance as middle of the pack: it's neither a barnburner nor a slug. we found the rack-and-pinion steering provided good feedback with precise control. The edge we drove had all-wheel drive and the optional 18-inch wheels helped make the car more sure-footed. We did not get a chance to drive a base model but suspect it will still be more than acceptable despite having slightly less grip. the all-wheel-drive system is simple, with a viscous coupling in the middle of the driveshaft that constantly alters the power to the front or rear depending on the need at any given time. the edge is not designed for off-road use yet it has a decent ground clearance of eight inches and ford even specifies its approach angle (16 inches), departure angle (24. 5 inches), and ramp break over angle (17 degrees), specifications usually reserved for off-road vehicles. We think it'll be fine for unpaved roads. Ford's advancetrac electronic stability control is standard on all models. It operates via the abs to control wheel slippage when the driver pushes the vehicle beyond the limit in slippery conditions or in emergency avoidance situation on a dry highway. summarythere's no denying that the ford e. 2013 ford flex review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Improved, great for family road trips. introductionsubstantially upgraded for 2013, the ford flex is an innovative vehicle, and the only full-size car of its kind. The mazda5, a distant cousin, is the same people-moving type of vehicle in the midsize class, but the larger and smoother flex is in a field of one. And 45 percent of flex owners are women. with standard seating for seven in its 2-3-2 configuration (optional 2-2-2), the flex is all about people. Except when the seats fold flat, as they easily do; then it can be all about cargo. Because flex is not built on a rugged body-on-frame chassis, it's not like an old-school suv. Nor is flex like a van. At first ford called it a crossover utility vehicle, but now ford has decided that the term is unclear, so the latest official word is that it's just a utility vehicle. We'd call it a superb cross between a limo and a taxi. The hood and roof are long and flat, the windshield stands relatively straight, the side and rear glass is flat, and the corners are sharp, although the front end has been rounded a bit for 2013. The shape is honest, simple, and even elegant, for a box. It suggests interior room and maximum space utilization. It has presence and upscale cues that some might call bling. The grille and tailgate have been redone for 2013, with a chrome or satin aluminum band, but frankly we can't say that's an improvement over the old three bars and signature blue oval. there are substantial improvements for 2013. Most notable is a revised v6 that comes standard on the base 2013 flex se and 2013 flex sel: for 2013, the 3. 5-liter v6 engine delivers 25 more horsepower, to 287 hp (with 254 foot-pounds of torque at 4000 rpm), while gaining 1 mile per gallon, to 18 city/25 highway, according to the epa. This boost to the base 3. 5-liter v6 is the result of new twin independent variable camshaft timing, or ti-vct as ford calls it. Ford continues to lead the way among american manufacturers in engine technology. the full-tilt flex limited all-wheel-drive model uses the dazzling twin-turbo 3. 5-liter ecoboost v6 with 365 horsepower and 350 foot-pounds of torque at a super-low 1500 rpm, which gets just 2 mpg less than the base v6, or 16 city/23 highway. But we also got good miles on an easy freeway and around town, and the flex ride is smooth and composed. It's comfortable and doesn't feel firm. The cabin is silent and steady. It's a pleasure to drive. we loved the seamless 6-speed transmission shifting and programming, and the ergonomics of the perfectly designed paddles, on the limited. The 2013 flex interior looks full, spacious, and luxurious. The basics and details are well covered. Materials, plastics, fabrics, leathers and carpets are well matched with textures, and sheen is nicely controlled. The visual impression is upscale comfort and luxury, more lincoln than ford. the cabin is exceptionally quiet, as there's been a lot of work on sound deadening on the new 2013 flex, for example liners in the wheelwells. the 2013 ford flex comes with a new brake system. We used the brakes hard on curvy two-lanes, and we loved the responsiveness and pedal feel. There's also new electronic power steering with a quicker steering ratio. Although the flex is no sports sedan, the cornering is impressive for a vehicle like this, with fairly high limits. however there's more to that than the tightened steering and suspension. For 2013, there's also new torque vectoring and curve control technology. More typically found on high-performance cars, torque vectoring uses the brakes to imitate the effect of a limited-slip differential, balancing torque between the front wheels during cornering, resulting in better grip and reduced understeer. Curve control is like electronic stability control, only quicker; it senses when a vehicle is entering a curve too fast, and applies the brakes to individual wheels to cut the speed by up to 10 mph in one second. Think freeway on-ramps or off-ramps, especially in the wet. if those safety features weren't enough, the 2013 flex is available with the automotive world's first production rear inflatable shoulder belts, designed to offer improved comfort and protection for rear-seat passengers. The advanced restraint system is designed to help reduce head, neck and chest injuries for rear seat passengers, often children and older passengers who can be more vulnerable to such injuries. lineupthe 2013 ford flex comes in three models: flex se, flex sel, flex limited. the front-wheel-drive flex se 30,885) comes with ford's new 3. 5-liter ti-vct v6 engine making 287 horsepower, and a 6-speed automatic transmission with manual gear selection. Limited also adds chrome door handles, satin aluminum grille and liftgate trim, hid headlamps, led taillamps, 19-inch painted aluminum wheels, 110v power outlet, adjustable pedals with memory, ambient lighting, woodgrain instrument and door trim, perforated leather-trimmed seats, blis blind spot monitoring system, hd radio, push-button start, power liftgate, rain-sensing wipers, rearview camera, remote start, sony 12-speaker audio system, and voice-activated navigation system. Active safety features include torque vectoring control, curve control, anti-lock brakes (abs), advancetrac electronic traction control, rsc roll stability control, brake assist, and electronic brake force distribution (ebd). Optional all-wheel drive can enhance safety in slippery conditions. walkaroundthe ford flex is a stylish box. Some will find the shape honest, simple, and even elegant, for a box. It's not shy. five feet eight inches tall, the flex is higher than a station wagon but lower than an suv like the ford explorer. We wonder if it's an afterthought. We're not sure if it helps or not. These indents must also help stiffen the doors, for a more solid closing sound. what does work is the addition for 2013 of black for the roof (adding to silver or white); too bad the black roof comes with a package that includes 20-inch wheels.
