2005 ford explorer review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. America's most popular suv. introductionfor more than a dozen years, the ford explorer has been the best-selling suv in america. In fact, it's the sixth best-selling vehicle. It's become the standard-issue suburban family hauler. Though capable as a tow vehicle and able to venture off the highway, most explorers spend their lives shuttling people, collecting groceries and performing the duties station wagons performed when baby boomers were growing up. The explorer answers this call admirably and comfortably, and that's a big part of the reason it's so popular.  the explorer is roomy and comfortable. It can seat seven people when equipped with the optional third-row seat, which folds flat into the cargo floor when not needed. Part of the reason for this is a superb five-speed automatic transmission. Explorer's wide track and long wheelbase give it a solid, stable stance, while its independent rear suspension (an unusual feature in a mid-to-large-size suv) gives it a smoother ride and better handling than suvs with traditional live rear axles.  safety features abound. Advancetrac with roll stability control is now standard on all explorers. This sophisticated system not only senses and corrects potential skids and slides, but also monitors for potential rollovers. We recommend the optional safety canopy airbags, which are designed to provide some protection in the event of a rollover. Anti-lock brakes (abs) are also standard, and a tire pressure monitor comes on all but the base model.  the explorer is rated to pull trailers up to 7,140 pounds when properly equipped, and though it does not excel at off-road travel, it can go most of the places most of us need to go. lineupthe 2005 ford explorer is available in six trim levels: xls, xls sport, xlt, xlt sport, eddie bauer, and limited.    an overhead-cam v6 engine is standard on all models. An overhead-cam v8 800) is an option for all models except the xls. All explorers come with a five-speed automatic transmission. Xls sport 2wd 28,260) and 4wd 30,490) add the tire-pressure monitoring system, 16-inch aluminum wheels, black step bars and wheel-lip moldings, an upgraded center console and floor mats.  xlt 2wd 29,650) and 4wd 31,875) get approach lamps in the side mirrors, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a six-way power driver's seat, lumbar adjustment for both driver and passenger, an overhead console with outside-temperature indicator and compass, and warm steel accents for the center stack. Outside, a monochromatic treatment with chrome grille and fog lamps sets xlt apart. The limited 2wd 34,580) and 4wd 36,805) come with all the eddie bauer goodies, but a somewhat different look, thanks to chromed wheels and roof rails outside and higher-grade single-tone leather inside, with madarin teak accents.  all but xls can be ordered with third-row seating 745), auxiliary rear-compartment air conditioning 650), reverse-sensing system 255), power moonroof 850), and a dvd entertainment system 1,295). A trailer towing prep package 150) replaces the standard class ii hitch with a class iii/iv hitch and adds a 3. 73 (rather than 3. 55) limited-slip rear axle and seven-wire trailer harness.  second-row bucket seats with an extended floor console are available 795) on eddie bauer and limited. An off-road package 385) for xls and xlt consists of skid plates, tow hooks, off-road suspension and all-terrain tires.  the optional safety canopy air curtain system 560) is designed to help protect first- and second-row outboard occupants during side-impacts or rollovers, and is designed to improve rollover protection by staying inflated for a longer period. Ford has done a great deal of research on this technology and we strongly recommend this option. walkaroundwith its wheels pushed out toward the corners, the ford explorer looks stable and comfortable. Though ubiquitous, it is a handsome, good-looking vehicle. Front and rear fascia are smoothly integrated, while jeweled headlamps and tail lamps give it a sophisticated look. Various combinations of bright, blacked-out, color-contrasting or color-coodinated trim distinguish the xls from the xlt from the bauer from the limited. Uplevel models come standard with an illuminated keypad on the door for keyless entry. The keypad doesn't improve the appearance of the explorer, but it continues to be a popular feature among loyal ford owners. interiorthe explorer is a comfortable vehicle, even on long trips. We found the cloth seats in the xlt comfortable, firm, and supportive, with lots of adjustments. The same held true for the leather seats in the eddie bauer model.  adjustable pedals, a tilt steering wheel, and long seat travel help the explorer fit a wide variety of body types. Big coat hooks accommodate thick hangers and big loads of dry cleaning, something few manufacturers get right. Nicely designed cubbies with rubber mats provide space for a wallet, sunglasses, a pen, cans, and bottles. A relatively large center console keeps odds and ends in check. The interior door handles seemed a bit awkward at first, but that went away with familiarization. Map pockets on the insides of the doors are handy and swell at the end to hold water bottles, but wouldn't accommodate the one-liter size. The front power outlet was positioned well for a cell phone, but like most, was a reach for a radar detector. The trip computer came in handy, calculating the distance to an empty fuel tank. The optional six-disc in-dash cd player sounds good and is easy to operate, with large, clearly marked controls.  the second row of seats is quite comfortable. Many people prefer the second-row bucket seats available on eddie bauer and limited, which are more comfortable but only accommodate two passengers.  seatbelts use retractors and pre-tensioners designed to reduce injuries in a hard crash. The second-row center seat has an integrated shoulder belt, a feature not found on all suvs. All occupants should always wear their seat belts as they are the first line of defense in an accident.  third-row seating is available. In fact, the decision to add third-row seating drove the design and engineering of the current explorer. As a result, ford has done an excellent job of making the third row as roomy as possible, while also making it fold quickly into the floor when it isn't needed. It isn't comfortable for an adult. Head, hip, and leg room in the explorer's third row measure 38. 9, 45. 4, and 34. 9 inches, respectively, versus the envoy xl's 38. 5, 45. 9, and 31. 2. Yet the explorer rides on a relatively handy 113. 7 inch wheelbase, vs. The awkward 129 inches of the extended trailblazer and envoy. It is a tribute to the clever design of ex.

2003 ford f-150 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All the pickup basics and a harley-davidson edition to boot. introductionquieter and more carlike than ever, the ford f-150 continues to be the light-duty pickup truck by which all others are measured. The world's best-selling truck continues to evolve into a sedan with a handy bed attached.  all 2003 models get a new noise control package, 75 improvements in all, according to ford, for a 10-percent quieter ride. Audio system choices now include a cassette/cd player and an in-dash six-cd changer. All 2003 f-150s now have the latch (lower anchors and tethers for children) systems as standard equipment.  a new heritage edition f-150 commemorates 100 years of ford motor company history. An f-150 stx edition is newly available on regular cab and supercab xl and xlt. King ranch models get chrome tubular running boards, a six-disc in-dash cd changer and woodgrain bezels.  . lineupthere is something for everybody at ford's f-150 store; they've made sure of that. Three engines are available: standard engine for the base xl is a 4. 2-liter v6 that makes 202 horsepower. A 4. 6-liter v8 rated at 231 horsepower is optional in xl models and xlt, standard in all others. No light-duty diesel engine is available for f-150 models. The three cab styles are offered in xl, xlt, and lariat trim levels; supercabs and supercrews can also be had as king ranch models, with leather captain's chairs, a premium audio system, and unique badging.  supercrew features rear seats that can quickly be converted into covered cargo space. Overall length is kept reasonable by using an ultra-short bed that measures just 5-1/2 feet. The bed is a compromise, but it relieves the driver of the daily burden of maneuvering a pickup into tight urban or country spaces. The lariat supercrew is equipped like a luxury sport-utility, with leather upholstery, power-adjustable pedals and an optional moonroof and rear-seat entertainment system.  air conditioning is standard equipment on almost all f-150s and electronic automatic temperature control is now standard on lariat, king ranch and supercrew models. Power-adjustable pedals are standard on all models for 2003. Antilock brakes (abs) are standard throughout the f-150 line, and remote keyless entry is standard on xlts.  the f-150 model matrix is huge, and includes some specialty models. The high-performance svt lightning packs a supercharged 5. 4-liter v8 rated at 380 horsepower and 450 foot-pounds of torque. Special svt wheels, tires, and suspension are calibrated more for handling than for hauling. This limited-production street rod is available only as a 2wd regular cab on the 120-inch short wheelbase.  also available for 2003 is a new ford harley-davidson f-150 supercrew. It features a supercharged 5. 4-liter triton v8 engine with 345 horsepower and 425 foot-pounds of torque. It's available in black or optional two-tone paint, black over silver with a high cutline and orange details. Body-color bumpers, a new front end with fog lamps, a chrome grille and chrome tie-down hooks, and clear-lens headlamps are standard, as are 20x9-inch chromed aluminum wheels with the harley logo. The h-d pickup is lowered one inch, with a dual inlet-dual outlet muffler that ends in chrome 3 1? 2-inch slash-cut exhaust tips. A special 100th anniversary nameplate commemorates the centennial of ford and harley next year.  . walkaroundthe f-150 is a stylish truck, one that pays more serious attention to aerodynamics than either the dodge or gm pickups. It's rounder, friendlier and looks more like a car. That may be part of the reason it outsells all other pickup trucks by a considerable margin. In two years, the whole f-150 design will change to something far more radical and big-truck-like, putting an end to the aero truck phase at ford design, but for now, the f-150 is still a looker, loaded with features.  the f-150's aerodynamic hood drops away very rapidly from the base of the windshield, so it's easier to see what's immediately in front of the truck, handy for maneuvering off-road, for parking, and when navigating in the city. Its fenders seem to make small rural roads smaller. In tight quarters, this feels like a big truck.  . interiorthe f-150 takes its interior design cues from the company's passenger cars. The designers simply adapted these cues to the pickup's larger cab. The curves, surfaces, textures, instrumentation and graphics inside the f-150 are more adventurous, more modern, and in some ways better executed than the gm and dodge, big and bold but not outsized for such a big vehicle.  the mid-range f-150 xlt has dual air bags with a passenger-side deactivation switch. They offer a lot of interior space for the money. The xlt's cloth seats recline, and a lumbar support on the driver's side provides even more driving comfort.  all ford pickups share another trait: a relatively high ride height, even on 2x4 models. Getting into and out of the rear seats was easy. The rear seats are comfortable and offer good legroom, allowing passengers to slide their feet under the front seats. Adults should be able to ride back there for longer trips. It's also a nice, comfortable place to change into and out of almost any kind of recreational gear. And the f-150 aftermarket is a billion-dollar business. It's a great place to put cargo or pets. Small storage compartments behind the front seats add utility. Good, solid brakes, but not impressive in terms of sheer power.  although the optional 4. 6-liter v8 engine is rated 231 horsepower and 293 foot–pounds of torque, we don't think it's as good a performer in many respects as the small v8 engines from gm and dodge, most of which are larger in displacement. It's a good, solid engine, with millions of examples on the road, and it sounds good at full throttle, but we find it a little anemic for all-around street use, and we would certainly find it wanting if we had to haul anything heavy or tow a trailer up a mountain road. 1998 ford explorer review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Subtle changes for the most popular suv. introductionthere seems to be an unending stream of sport-utilities hitting showrooms. But none have come close to the popularity of ford's explorer.  it has been so successful that there has been little inducement to change it. However, there are some improvements for 1998. The standard abs has been massaged to improve control on slippery surfaces, with reduced noise and vibration when activated. The rack-and-pinion steering system has been refined for better on-center feel and quicker response. The normal mode is auto. This mode continually monitors and adjusts power to the front wheels to minimize slip. The 4x4 high mode electronically locks the transfer case in high gear, providing a 50/50 torque split between the front and rear wheels; this mode is primarily for driving off road or in extreme winter conditions. Choices start with a 4. 0-liter overhead-valve v6 rated at 160 horsepower. Next up is a 4. 0-liter single overhead-cam v6 with 205 hp. And finally, the big 5. 0-liter v8 makes 215 hp.  explorer permutations are numerable. All told, in ascending order of trim and price, there is explorer xl, sport, xlt, eddie bauer and limited. Deciding to buy an explorer is not too difficult. Deciding which explorer with which engine and which transmission could take an afternoon of brochure browsing. walkaroundbefore there was explorer, there was jeep cherokee with its straight lines and sharp edges. The explorer introduced softer lines and rounded edges and set the prevailing suv style in the process. That look continues. The distinctive, and large, grille opening is flanked by wraparound headlights. There's a slot for air in the bumper, and an air scoop below. The p235/75r15 tires are mounted on cast aluminum wheels.  the front suspension is independent, using ford's recently introduced short- and long-arm design. At the rear--a vestige of its truck heritage--is a two-leaf variable rate spring for each wheel. Disc brakes are used all around and abs is standard, features that give the explorer an edge over many of its competitors.  the major exterior change for 1998 is a new liftgate. The glass-release handle is larger and the window is larger. The taillamps, license plate attachments, the high stop light and name badges are new.  we liked the new rear liftgate a lot. There is a simple t-handle marked 'gate' on one side, 'window' on the other. Turn toward 'gate' and the top-hinged door rises easily and parks up and well out of the way. Turn the handle toward 'window' and the glass can be raised by itself. Another feature we liked is a convenient interior power lock/unlock button on top of the left rear wheel-well for operating the door locks when standing at the back of the vehicle. Privacy glass is part of the xlt package and more lightly tinted glass is standard on all models. interiorthis is a sport-utility truck, so there is some climbing to be done getting in. But entry height is not a serious problem. Shorter folks may find optional running boards helpful.  the overall design of the interior is quite good, featuring the flowing shapes and soft-edged buttons and controls now favored by ford. The various controls are king-size, making them easy to operate when the vehicle is moving, and we give the overall appearance of the instrument panel top marks. Floor consoles have been redesigned. Higher trim levels boast rear cupholders and a storage bin. The optional moon roof has a one-touch-open feature.  seating is a big plus. The front buckets are covered in high-quality cloth with an attractive, subdued pattern. It is, as mentioned, easy to get in and out of it. Visibility all around is quite good in spite of the large b- and c- roof pillars. The driver enjoys that secure, command-of-the-road seating position that's helped to make sport-utilities and pickup trucks so popular.  however, the explorer doesn't really feel like a truck on the road. Well, maybe a little--but only a little. While the ride is far from bouncy and sharp, it is more springy than any sedan, and the reason has to be those antique leaf springs in the rear. The suspension does do a good job absorbing road irregularities, though, and that's how it differs from trucks. Firm but comfortable, with a strong sense of control.  we were a little surprised at the level of wind noise in the 40-60 mph range in what otherwise is a solid, well-built vehicle.  also, the new v6 becomes noticeably audible under hard acceleration. That's common for sport-utility vehicles, however, and ford's v6 engine is smooth and quiet in normal operation.  we were pleasantly surprised by the straight-line performance those 205 horses provided. Nevertheless, it launched with enthusiasm and maintained that enthusiasm to a degree that would calm any concerns about safe merging with traffic.  although the explorer has racked up virtually all of its huge sales numbers with the standard overhead-valve engine, the overhead-cam version is a whole order of magnitude better. We recommend it strongly.  at moderate speed on a favorite section of twisty bits, the explorer was quite good: no lean in turns, the steering was exceptionally quick and precise, no wander in a straight line and on the narrow road did not give the impression it was about to shoulder oncoming traffic into the ditch. It simply does not drive large. summarythe explorer continues to be the best-selling sport-utility vehicle in the country. It isn't necessarily the best suv in the country, at least if real off-road capability is a factor. Modest ground clearance and a long wheelbase limit its usefulness in rough country. What seems to keep the explorer on top is its roominess, solid reputation for durability, quality engineering, good looks and its overall reputation as the leader. And it's not the least expensive, by any means. But for the kind of all-around uses most families find for their sport-utilities, the explorer's formula is still tough to beat. assembled inst. 1995 ford f-150 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Ford’s f-series is still king of the road. introductionthere are more ford f-series pickups sold every year than any other car or truck on the market, and it has been that way for more than a decade. Such is the popularity of ford’s full-size pickup, which has long offered a powerful one-two punch of enduring performance and rugged overall appeal.  to keep up with demand for the f-series trucks, ford now has five plants scattered across the country with a total manufacturing capacity of nearly 700,000 units per year.  like the chevrolet c/k trucks and the dodge ram - the ford’s only true competitors - the f-series comes in a huge array of short-and long-wheelbase body styles. Last year’s improvements included a whole pile of safety-related equipment, including a driver’s airbag, a center high-mounted brake light combined with the cargo bed lamp, cfc-free air conditioning, and a brake/shift interlock system. This information comes from ford, which estimates about 16 mpg in combined city/highway driving. We checked out the power stroke engine in an f-250 xlt regular cab styleside (the lighter-duty f-150 isn’t equipped to cope with the power stroke diesel).  the big, brawny f-250 is the model for truck quality in this segment, with brilliant paint, deep chrome and uniform panel fits, including the tailgate and the bed. The interior fit-and-finish is on par with ford full-size sedans. With its chromed, toothy grille, the f-250 looks tough - and is.  the f-250 xlt power stroke rides on lt215/85r-16d tires and eight-lug, 16-in. Wheels, all controlled by ford’s patented twin i-beam front suspension with coil springs. There’s a solid axle with leaf springs in the rear, and like any truck, it’s more comfortable loaded than not. However, ride harshness is not at all objectionable when it’s empty. The driving position is commanding, there’s lots of glass area and there’s plenty of room in which to maneuver.  some tall drivers may find the regular cab a bit short on headroom - not so much vertically (there’s more than 40 in. The dodge ram’s standard cab holds the edge in roominess. Other than that, we don’t have any knocks on comfort or accommodation.  the 17:1 ratio power steering communicates directly with the driver but tends to be numb and needs corrections at highway speeds. The power brakes are a hefty 11. 72-in. This truck absolutely lunges across intersections when it’s loaded, and will pull a 7000-lb. House trailer without looking back.  the downside? Direct-injection diesels are noisy. Anti-lock Brakes✔ AM/FM✔ Air Conditioning
