2003 ford taurus review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Refinements improve a solid sedan. introductionthe ford taurus is more than practical family transportation. It is a genuinely exciting mid-size sedan. New seals for the doors, windows and rearview mirrors along with new sound damping in the floor make for a quieter cabin. Illuminated cruise control switches have been added and the controls for the adjustable pedals have been moved to the instrument panel for easier access. New seven-spoke wheels add a fresh look to the 2003 models.  for 2003, more features come standard, including power windows and door locks, a tilt steering column and floor mats. Optional trim packages include a new sport package for the ses sedan. The wagon is available in se 21,345) and sel 23,170) versions. A choice of two 3. 0-liter v6 engines is available. This 3. 0-liter 12-valve v6 uses a traditional overhead-valve design. The vulcan v6 is rated at 155 horsepower and 185 pounds-feet of torque. Although not particularly quick from a standstill, once rolling it delivers more than adequate performance, along with a nicely rorty exhaust note. A flexible fuel version of the vulcan engine can run on e-85 ethanol, regular unleaded gasoline or any combination of the two in the same 18-gallon fuel tank.  ses is a popular choice and comes in standard and deluxe variations. Ses adds an in-dash single cd player, front bucket seats with six-way power and a manual lumbar adjustment on the driver's side. Also standard is ford's duratec v6, a more sophisticated engine with double overhead cams working 24 valves. This engine also displaces 3. 0 liters, but revs higher and produces 200 hp and 200 lbs.-ft. It comes with five-spoke aluminum sport wheels, a rear spoiler, special fender badging, pewter brushed interior trim, two-tone black and gray sport seats and special floor mats.  sel, available in deluxe and premium editions, adds seven-spoke machined aluminum wheels, a six-cd changer, leather-wrapped steering wheel, dark paledo wood-trimmed interior, automatic electronic temperature control, adjustable pedals and keyless keypad entry.  wagons are better equipped than their sedan counterparts. The sel wagon adds seven-spoke machined aluminum wheels, a six-cd changer, keypad entry and automatic climate controls.  key options for many models include a mach audio system 345), anti-lock brakes 600), cellport communications system 350), a power moonroof 895), and adjustable pedals 120).  . walkaroundthe ford taurus is a familiar design that has been with us for a few years now. The grille is broad, aggressive, and unmistakably ford-oval, grinning between the large cat's-eye headlamps. Its flanks undulate handsomely with crisp character lines, and its rear end bears a resemblance to the sexy stern of the jaguar s-type.  the sedan's trunk is of generous size and contains the mini-spare tire. The wagon has a flip-up rear window in its tailgate.  . interiorthe taurus cabin is functional and attractive, with controls that are straightforward and easy to use. The materials, switchgear and interior textures have a high-quality look and feel. For 2003, those controls are mounted in a new dashboard and console unit.  the other big interior change is the quiet, thanks to better noise, vibration and harshness controls that include better damping in the floor and measures that reduce air leakage and cabin noise, including the use of expanding foam in the windshield support pillars and various body cavities and the use of new sealing materials in weld access holes.  lx, se and the non-sport ses sedans seat six, thanks to a seating console between their separate front seats. Ford's well-publicized adjustable pedals make a comfortable driving position possible for even very short-legged drivers. The small-diameter steering wheel has a pleasingly thick grip. The cushions and seatbacks are more firm than soft, and firm is usually best on long drives.  the roomy rear compartment seats three, but is set up well for two as the seat forms two semi-buckets and has a pull-down central armrest containing two cupholders. A ventilation duct at the rear of the center console provides climate control for rear passengers. Dual baby-seat anchors are provided on each side of the rear seat. In the se wagon and ses and sel sedans, the rear seatback is split 60/40 and folds down, providing an enormous pass-through luggage capability for skis and other long items.  with its 60/40 split rear seats folded down, the roomy taurus wagon has space for a maximum of 81. 3 cubic feet of cargo; with six passengers aboard, there's still 38. 8 cu. Behind them.  . driving impressionthe ford taurus is a genuinely satisfying car to drive. Its duratec v6 is as responsive as a finger snap, delivering crisp acceleration from low revs straight through to the glass-smooth full-throttle shift point. This engine not only provides good thrust, it makes an understated but nicely throaty declaration that it means business. Its shifts are positive, authoritative, and at the same time, almost impossible to feel. Powerful front-wheel-drive cars like the taurus sel need traction control to reduce wheel spin and provide better control of the car.  the taurus chassis is a good match for this forceful duratec drivetrain. The fully independent suspension provides a smooth, impact-free ride. Taurus uses gas-pressurized shock absorbers, unusual in a family sedan; when pushed in the corners, it remains stable, nimble and ready for more. Cornered hard, its body roll is moderate, and the nicely tuned variable-ratio power rack-and-pinion steering delivers a steady stream of road information. Braking performance was much smoother than that of a dodge intrepid tested at the same time.  with its excellent chassis and duratec power, the ford taurus comes close to being a sports sedan for the price of a family mid-size sedan.  . summaryfor several years, the taurus has been the bowl of chocolate-chip mint in a sea of plain vanilla. While most sedans in the mid-size class seem designed to blend into the scenery, the taurus stands out like a wildebeest in plaid pajamas.  not only does the taurus look like it came from the future, it drives like it came from europe. Yet it comes with a price tag that's quite reasonable. Two engines are available, and both deliver a vigorous response, though we recommend the newer duratec engine. Taurus rides smoothly enough for family duty

2003 ford f-150 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All the pickup basics and a harley-davidson edition to boot. introductionquieter and more carlike than ever, the ford f-150 continues to be the light-duty pickup truck by which all others are measured. The world's best-selling truck continues to evolve into a sedan with a handy bed attached.  all 2003 models get a new noise control package, 75 improvements in all, according to ford, for a 10-percent quieter ride. Audio system choices now include a cassette/cd player and an in-dash six-cd changer. All 2003 f-150s now have the latch (lower anchors and tethers for children) systems as standard equipment.  a new heritage edition f-150 commemorates 100 years of ford motor company history. An f-150 stx edition is newly available on regular cab and supercab xl and xlt. King ranch models get chrome tubular running boards, a six-disc in-dash cd changer and woodgrain bezels.  . lineupthere is something for everybody at ford's f-150 store; they've made sure of that. Three engines are available: standard engine for the base xl is a 4. 2-liter v6 that makes 202 horsepower. A 4. 6-liter v8 rated at 231 horsepower is optional in xl models and xlt, standard in all others. No light-duty diesel engine is available for f-150 models. The three cab styles are offered in xl, xlt, and lariat trim levels; supercabs and supercrews can also be had as king ranch models, with leather captain's chairs, a premium audio system, and unique badging.  supercrew features rear seats that can quickly be converted into covered cargo space. Overall length is kept reasonable by using an ultra-short bed that measures just 5-1/2 feet. The bed is a compromise, but it relieves the driver of the daily burden of maneuvering a pickup into tight urban or country spaces. The lariat supercrew is equipped like a luxury sport-utility, with leather upholstery, power-adjustable pedals and an optional moonroof and rear-seat entertainment system.  air conditioning is standard equipment on almost all f-150s and electronic automatic temperature control is now standard on lariat, king ranch and supercrew models. Power-adjustable pedals are standard on all models for 2003. Antilock brakes (abs) are standard throughout the f-150 line, and remote keyless entry is standard on xlts.  the f-150 model matrix is huge, and includes some specialty models. The high-performance svt lightning packs a supercharged 5. 4-liter v8 rated at 380 horsepower and 450 foot-pounds of torque. Special svt wheels, tires, and suspension are calibrated more for handling than for hauling. This limited-production street rod is available only as a 2wd regular cab on the 120-inch short wheelbase.  also available for 2003 is a new ford harley-davidson f-150 supercrew. It features a supercharged 5. 4-liter triton v8 engine with 345 horsepower and 425 foot-pounds of torque. It's available in black or optional two-tone paint, black over silver with a high cutline and orange details. Body-color bumpers, a new front end with fog lamps, a chrome grille and chrome tie-down hooks, and clear-lens headlamps are standard, as are 20x9-inch chromed aluminum wheels with the harley logo. The h-d pickup is lowered one inch, with a dual inlet-dual outlet muffler that ends in chrome 3 1? 2-inch slash-cut exhaust tips. A special 100th anniversary nameplate commemorates the centennial of ford and harley next year.  . walkaroundthe f-150 is a stylish truck, one that pays more serious attention to aerodynamics than either the dodge or gm pickups. It's rounder, friendlier and looks more like a car. That may be part of the reason it outsells all other pickup trucks by a considerable margin. In two years, the whole f-150 design will change to something far more radical and big-truck-like, putting an end to the aero truck phase at ford design, but for now, the f-150 is still a looker, loaded with features.  the f-150's aerodynamic hood drops away very rapidly from the base of the windshield, so it's easier to see what's immediately in front of the truck, handy for maneuvering off-road, for parking, and when navigating in the city. Its fenders seem to make small rural roads smaller. In tight quarters, this feels like a big truck.  . interiorthe f-150 takes its interior design cues from the company's passenger cars. The designers simply adapted these cues to the pickup's larger cab. The curves, surfaces, textures, instrumentation and graphics inside the f-150 are more adventurous, more modern, and in some ways better executed than the gm and dodge, big and bold but not outsized for such a big vehicle.  the mid-range f-150 xlt has dual air bags with a passenger-side deactivation switch. They offer a lot of interior space for the money. The xlt's cloth seats recline, and a lumbar support on the driver's side provides even more driving comfort.  all ford pickups share another trait: a relatively high ride height, even on 2x4 models. Getting into and out of the rear seats was easy. The rear seats are comfortable and offer good legroom, allowing passengers to slide their feet under the front seats. Adults should be able to ride back there for longer trips. It's also a nice, comfortable place to change into and out of almost any kind of recreational gear. And the f-150 aftermarket is a billion-dollar business. It's a great place to put cargo or pets. Small storage compartments behind the front seats add utility. Good, solid brakes, but not impressive in terms of sheer power.  although the optional 4. 6-liter v8 engine is rated 231 horsepower and 293 foot–pounds of torque, we don't think it's as good a performer in many respects as the small v8 engines from gm and dodge, most of which are larger in displacement. It's a good, solid engine, with millions of examples on the road, and it sounds good at full throttle, but we find it a little anemic for all-around street use, and we would certainly find it wanting if we had to haul anything heavy or tow a trailer up a mountain road. 2003 ford escape review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Best in its class. introductionthe ford escape is one of the best of the small, affordable suvs, assuming that off-road travel isn't a priority. It accelerates briskly when equipped with the optional v6 engine. Folding down the rear seats reveals a flat, moderately sized cargo area. Best of all, its price is relatively low.  the escape was an all-new vehicle in 2001. For 2003, all models have upgraded interior materials for better appearance and feel. The seat fabrics, floor mats and door trim are of higher quality and are available in new patterns and hues. The center stack, door bezels and window switches are painted for a two-tone interior effect, and the window switches are illuminated for nighttime convenience.  for 2003, ford has added an up-market limited trim level, and a limited-edition option package called midnight.  . lineupfor 2003, ford has expanded the escape model lineup from two trim levels to three. Xlt begins at $22,335 with 2wd and at $23,960 with 4wd. New for 2003 is the limited, at $25,460 with 2wd and $26,910 with 4wd.  the base xls comes with a high level of standard equipment that includes air conditioning, illuminated remote entry, power windows and mirrors, a tilt steering column, center console, 15-inch steel wheels and an am/fm/cd/cassette audio system with a clock. Xls shifts gears with a standard five-speed manual transmission. For example, the xlt premium package 1230) includes leather seating surfaces, leather-wrapped steering wheel, a 60/40 split rear bench seat, front door map pockets, an overhead console with dual storage bins, a front passenger under-seat storage tray, and a power moonroof with sunshade.  new for 2003 is the xlt appearance package, which includes glossy dark shadow gray bumper fascias and side cladding, machined bright aluminum 16-inch wheels and dark shadow gray step bars.  also new is a limited edition xlt called midnight. The midnight escape features gloss black paint on fascias, body cladding and wheel-lip moldings. A unique black trim treatment and ebony nudo leather-trimmed seats complement the all-black exterior. Midnight comes loaded with side-impact air bags, a mach mp3 music system, and 16-inch bright, machined aluminum wheels with high-gloss black accents and silver center caps. Midnight options include side-step bars and a trailer-towing package. Ford designers worked to balance the confidence and ruggedness of a big suv with a sportier image of agility and fun. The escape's forward-poised stance, large wheel lips, wide body cladding and integrated bumper guard lend a functional appearance, while its short front and rear overhangs add to its sporting appeal. Outside door handles are easy to grab and feel like they're going to last.  accessories from ford outfitters include a snap-in pet barrier and a system to haul two mountain bikes in the cargo area. Bike racks can also be mounted on the roof; the standard roof rack with crossbars holds up to 100 pounds. We don't like the idea of compromising an suv's ground clearance with running boards, but ford claims that the running boards on the escape do not reduce ground clearance. They are designed to make it easier to lift kayaks, snowboards and other toys onto the roof rack. The rear bumper is also designed to aid roof access.  new for 2003 is an industry-first, dual-loading rack, which ford calls the no boundaries rack system. This provides two separate loading surfaces: a more traditional one on the roof and an additional one across the rear. When not in use, the sliding rails can be stored within the conventional roof portion of the rack system.  . interiorwith 133. 9 cubic feet of total interior volume, the escape is among the most spacious of the small suvs. Even with the split 60/40 rear seats set up to accommodate up to five passengers, escape still provides 33 cubic feet of cargo space.  escaping into or out of the front seats is made easier by low door sills and wide door openings. In the front-seat area, the escape is almost as roomy as ford's mid-size explorer. The rear seats offer good knee room.  ford has significantly upgraded the escape's interior for 2003. Both xls and xlt benefit from new interior fabrics and materials with improved quality and feel. There's also a new finish for center stack, and now the front-door power window and lock switches light up to make them easier to find. Side-impact airbags are standard on limited and midnight, optional 345) on xls and xlt.  white-faced instruments, in vogue these days, are set in a straightforward instrument panel. The audio system and heating, ventilation and air conditioning controls in the center stack are angled slightly toward the driver to ease reach while driving. Ford engineers say they tested the placement of the controls by using blindfolded occupants, but don't try that while driving.  . driving impressionsport-utility vehicles are not sports cars. In spite of that, california's twisting highway 1 is an enjoyable drive in the ford escape. Handling is relatively taut, without the mushiness that characterizes larger suvs with big off-road tires and long-travel suspensions. On muddy fire roads pocked with puddles and potholes, the escape is a blast. It's one of the best-handling suvs in this class, much better than a jeep liberty, better than a toyota rav4, quicker than a honda cr-v, but not as agile as a subaru forester.  steering is responsive. It feels direct and accurate with no dead spot in the center. There's enough feeling in the steering to impart a sense of control. Though this is not a sports car, the tires grip respectably in paved corners. When pushed beyond their limit, the front tires start slipping before the rear tires, just as with most front-wheel-drive sedans. This is called understeer, and it is intuitive and predictable. The escape provides surprisingly good transient response in a series of left-right-left corners. This permits quick, yet smooth, driving that will not upset passengers.  the v6 engine delivers good acceleration. While there's no such thing as too much power, it never feels lacking in the escape. The transmission shifts smoothly up and down, and chooses gears appropriately for the situation. The engine's broad power band never lugs or strains. This isn't the smoothest v6 on the market, nor is it the roughest. Abs comes into play just when expected and is detectable by the familiar pulsating sensation.  as mentioned, the escape handles well on gravel roads, but it is lacking in serious off-road situations. Its front-drive platform leaves it spinning its wheels on rough, loose, steep trails. The suspension does not have the articulation and travel needed for rugged terrain and there is no low-range set of gears. For serious off-road capability, look to the larger jeep liberty, the extreme jeep wrangler, or the luxurious and versatile land rover freelander. For everyday road travel, however, the ford escape is an excellent choice.  . summarythe ford escape is one of the best of the small, on-road suvs. The available v6 engine provides the escape with the most power in its class. A car-like ride makes it easy to live with. AM/FM✔ Power Windows✔ Anti-lock Brakes✔ Cruise Control✔ CD Changer✔ Leather Seats✔ Sunroof/Moonroof✔ Air Conditioning✔ Aluminum Wheels
